Political surge in Iraq.(News)

It has taken nine bloody and difficult months, but the deployment of 30 000 additional US troops appears at last to have brought not just a lull in the sectarian fighting in Iraq, but the first tangible steps toward genuine political reconciliation.

Last week, the parliament passed a crucial package of legislation that reflects real compromise among the many factions on Iraq's thorniest issues.

JOBLESS RATE HITS RECORD LOW.(MAIN)

Byline: STUART SILVERSTEIN Los Angeles Times

U.S. unemployment fell below 4 percent last month for the first time in 30 years, a strong performance that kept spreading the benefits of the economic expansion to more U.S. workers.

The U.S. Labor Department reported Friday that April's jobless rate was 3.9 percent, down from 4.1 percent in March, as employers added 340,000 workers to their payrolls. The robust job market also continued to boost wages, now up at an annualized rate of 4.5 percent so far this year, and cut joblessness for Latinos and blacks to their lowest levels on record.

Economists said the only downbeat note is that the continuing brisk job growth raises the likelihood that inflation will …

Excuses have been made by the media and Rob Moore, McCarthy's manager.

Frankly, the excuses are running dry, and it is clear to all that these two are not interested in playing for South Africa.

They have retired and "un-retired" from international soccer a number of occasions. They are running out of excuses, because the Fifa calendar has now been synchronised.

As Jonty Marks reported, the best players in Africa …

Somali Islamic militia behead rival clerics

Extremist Islamic militiamen beheaded two clerics from a rival group after stopping the vehicle taking them to be treated for wounds suffered in a gun battle, a spokesman for the clerics' group said.

The clerics were members of Ahlu Sunna Waljama which had been fighting against extremist al-Shabab militiamen in the town of Balad, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the capital Mogadishu, said spokesman Sheik Abdullahi Sheik Abu Yusuf.

Abu Yusuf blamed al-Shabab for the beheadings on Thursday but said the clerics were not involved in the earlier fighting. Al-Shabab controls large chunks of the country where it imposes a harsh brand of Islam, while battling …
